Mount Bawakaraeng Trek: A Three-Day Mountain Adventure in South Sulawesi

Rising approximately 2,830 metres above sea level, Mount Bawakaraeng is one of the most impressive trekking destinations in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its challenging trails, ancient mountain forest, dramatic ridges, peaceful campsites, and spectacular summit views make it an unforgettable destination for hikers seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.

The Mount Bawakaraeng Trek from Makassar is more than a journey to the top of a mountain. It is an opportunity to disconnect from busy city life, experience the natural beauty of the Sulawesi highlands, and explore a landscape that holds cultural and spiritual significance for local communities.

Our three-day, two-night trekking package is designed to provide enough time for hikers to enjoy the mountain without attempting an extremely rushed ascent. Private transportation, local guides, porters, camping equipment, meals, permits, and basic first-aid support are included, allowing guests to concentrate on the trail and the surrounding scenery.

Why Trek Mount Bawakaraeng?

Mount Bawakaraeng offers a varied trekking experience. The route passes through farmland, dense forest, rocky sections, open ridges, and exposed mountain terrain. As hikers climb higher, the changing landscape creates new views and photographic opportunities.

The mountain is especially famous for its golden sunsets. From the higher campsites and summit area, hikers may watch the evening light spread across the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges. When conditions are clear, clouds can gather below the summit, creating the memorable feeling of standing above a white sea.

Camping is another highlight of the journey. Spending the night in the forest or near the summit allows visitors to experience the quieter side of Mount Bawakaraeng. After the daytime hikers have left the trail, the mountain becomes peaceful, with only the sound of the wind, forest, and campsite activities.

For international travellers, this trek also offers an opportunity to discover a different side of South Sulawesi. While many visitors know the region for Makassar, Rammang-Rammang, and Toraja, its mountain landscapes remain relatively less explored.

Day 1: Makassar to the Post 8 Campsite

The adventure begins at approximately 7:30 AM with pickup from your hotel in Makassar or Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Travelling in a private vehicle provides flexibility and space for personal luggage and trekking equipment.

At around 8:00 AM, we begin the drive toward the Kanreapia Registration Post. The journey normally takes approximately five hours, depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions. Along the way, guests can observe the transition from the busy Makassar area to the cooler agricultural landscapes of Gowa Regency.

After arriving at the registration post at approximately 1:00 PM, the group completes the necessary administration and prepares for the hike. Lunch is served before trekking so everyone has enough energy for the first section of the route.

The trek from Kanreapia to Post 8 takes approximately five hours. The actual duration can vary according to fitness levels, trail conditions, rest periods, and the weight carried by each participant. The route gradually enters mountain terrain and passes several rest posts.

At approximately 6:00 PM, the group arrives at the Post 8 campsite. The guide and porter team help prepare the camping area and tents. Guests can change into warm clothing, rest, enjoy dinner, and recover after the first day of trekking.

Day 2: Post 8, Post 10, and the Summit

The second day begins at approximately 7:30 AM with breakfast at the campsite. After packing personal belongings and checking the equipment, the group continues toward Post 10.

This section takes approximately five hours and becomes more demanding as the trail gains elevation. Hikers should maintain a steady pace and follow the guide’s instructions, particularly on steep, rocky, or slippery sections.

The group is expected to reach Post 10 at around 12:30 PM. After arrival, the tents are set up, lunch is prepared, and guests have time to rest. Post 10 is located close to the summit area, making it a strategic campsite for exploring the upper part of Mount Bawakaraeng.

At approximately 3:00 PM, the group can continue toward Posts 11 and 12 before walking in the direction of Post 13. This part of the mountain is considered sacred by members of the local community. Visitors should behave respectfully, avoid damaging the natural environment, and follow all guidance provided by the local trekking team.

At around 5:00 PM, the group returns to the summit area to wait for the golden sunset. Weather permitting, the changing colours of the sky and the extensive mountain views create one of the most beautiful moments of the expedition.

After sunset, the group returns to camp. Dinner is served at approximately 7:00 PM, followed by free time. Guests can rest, enjoy warm drinks, talk with the trekking team, or observe the night sky before sleeping.

Day 3: Summit Morning and Descent

The final day begins at approximately 5:30 AM. Guests can enjoy the cool morning atmosphere around the summit of Mount Bawakaraeng before breakfast. Depending on the weather, the early morning may offer beautiful views of the surrounding peaks, clouds, and valleys.

At approximately 8:00 AM, the group begins the long descent to the Kanreapia Registration Post. The descent normally takes around ten hours. Although walking downhill may appear easier, it can place considerable pressure on the knees, ankles, and leg muscles. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially on steep or uneven terrain.

Lunch is served along the trail. The group will also take short breaks when necessary, but participants must maintain a suitable pace because the descent is long.

The expected arrival time at the registration post is approximately 6:00 PM. After completing the trek, guests can change clothes, organise their equipment, and enjoy dinner before travelling back to Makassar.

The private vehicle then returns the group to the city. Arrival at the hotel is expected at approximately 10:00 PM, although the exact time may change due to traffic, weather, trail conditions, and the group’s walking speed.

What Is Included?

The Mount Bawakaraeng trekking package includes private round-trip transportation from Makassar, a vehicle and driver, a professional trekking or local guide, and a porter team. Entrance fees, trekking permits, registration administration, camping equipment, three meals per day during the trek, and a standard first-aid kit are also included.

The porter team helps carry shared supplies and camping equipment. Guests are still responsible for carrying their personal necessities, including clothing, drinking water, medication, cameras, and other individual items unless a personal porter arrangement has been confirmed in advance.

Personal expenses, food and drinks purchased outside the package, personal trekking equipment, and optional tips for the guide, driver, and porters are not included.

What Should You Bring?

Every participant should prepare proper hiking shoes with reliable grip, comfortable trekking clothes, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, spare socks, gloves, and a hat. Other useful items include a headlamp, trekking poles, sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, personal medication, toiletries, and a waterproof cover for electronic devices.

Temperatures can become cold around the upper campsites, especially at night and before sunrise. Weather in the mountains can also change quickly, so hikers should prepare for sunshine, strong wind, fog, and rain during the same expedition.

Participants should place clothing and important items inside waterproof bags, even when using a backpack cover.

Fitness, Safety, and Responsible Trekking

This three-day trek requires good physical fitness, stamina, and previous experience with long walks or mountain trails. Participants should inform the operator about injuries, allergies, medical conditions, or dietary requirements before departure.

Safety always takes priority over the original schedule. The guide may adjust the route, departure time, campsite, or summit plan because of severe weather, unsafe trail conditions, participant health, or instructions from local authorities.

Visitors must carry their rubbish back, avoid disturbing wildlife, protect water sources, and respect culturally significant areas. Responsible trekking helps preserve Mount Bawakaraeng for local communities and future adventurers.
